Claims Against Bausch & Lomb
Claims against Bausch & Lomb allege that the Company either failed to remove the fungus from the Renu with MostureLoc eye solution or fostered its growth during the manufacturing process.
On April 10, 2006, the FDA and CDC announced investigations into reports of fungal keratitis across the country. Of 109 reports of fungal keratitis from June 2005 to March 2006, 28 were contact lens wearers, and 26 use ReNu contact solution just before developing the infection. The CDC has received reports of 50 cases of the fungal eye infections this year. Following the announcement of the investigation into the fungal infections, Bausch & Lomb announced it was suspending shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens product.
Fungal Keratitis Can Cause Blindness & Serious Injuries
Victims of fungal keratitis often suffer severe injuries as a result of the infection. The infection is caused by Fusarium fungus, which is a plant material in warmer climates. The infection can be difficult to detect and diagnose. Symptoms may include blurred vision, pain or discomfort in the eyes, sensitivity to light, and eye mucus/discharge.
